High Sierra SUV Trails, Volume II – The Western Slope is an unusual guidebook describing 40 backcountry excursions along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. These rough road adventures will take the reader on trails out of Auburn, Foresthill, Placerville, Jackson, Angels Camp, Sonora, Pinecrest, Mariposa, Oakhurst, Shaver Lake, Mono Hot Springs, Kings Canyon National Park, and Kernville. Included in the route descriptions are the Rubicon Trail, the Barrett Lake Trail, the Hell Hole Trail, the Ershim-Dusy Trail, and the Monache Meadow Trail. Roger Mitchell describes in great detail what you are likely to see along these back roads and jeep trails, including flora, fauna, geology, history, and mining. The 272-page book includes a map for each trail described, and the text is supplemented with both historic and modern day photos. Included is a trail rating system so the reader will know how difficult a road is before embarking on it. The routes described range from very easy to very difficult. This book has something of interest for everyone.
